Meet the ReadyForZero Team: Marshall

marshall 1

At ReadyForZero we strive to always be available and accountable to our users. That’s why we personally respond to every e-mail that’s sent to our support inbox and why we have our pictures on the About page. Now we’re sharing our stories here so you can get to know the fun and diverse people that are working hard everyday to make ReadyForZero better. We hope you enjoy these interviews – and don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments below!

Our next interview is with Marshall Brekka, Dev./Borg Master. Marshall is the youngest member on our team but you’d never guess it considering his long list of accomplishments. An epic problem-solver and quick thinker, he’s constantly working to improve the ReadyForZero site for our users. Read on to learn more about Marshall!

What were you doing before ReadyForZero and what brought you here?
I was interning at another start-up for a few months. Unfortunately, they shut-down but their CTO (Chief Technology Officer) sent out an email to a few founders he knew asking if they needed any interns. I received a list of contacts and started looking through it. When I saw ReadyForZero I thought “This looks so cool!” So I sent Ignacio an email.

So then what happened next?
Nacho told me a little bit about a project he thought I might be interested in.  I spent my first three months on that project. After that, I started to work on the main parts of the product. That’s when I really knew I was learning a lot and contributing productively.

What has been the most gratifying moment of your career at ReadyForZero?
It’s kind of a small part of our product but when a user enables an account for payments, we direct their money where it needs to go. I was responsible for coding that part when we launched payments!

What’s your favorite place to grab lunch with the team and what do you order?
I think my favorite place with the team is Osha Thai. And I get pork fried rice.

Imagine you’re in the ReadyForZero office of the future and can choose to include any game or feature you want. What would it be?
We’d have a band room, but only reasonably sound proofed. I think people should be able to hear it through the walls a little bit. There would probably be stage lighting too. And also it would definitely need a smoke machine.

Are there fans there too?
We would have some interns as our fans. But that’s just the dream.

You’re a very musical person. What instrument do you play?
I primarily play piano and guitar but I just recently bought a bass. I can also play ukulele. I used to play cello and I dabbled on the drums and did a little bit of saxophone. But my focus was writing music.

You’re also a musical tutor to one of our very own team members: Gene!
I would say I’m an assistant tutor. I’m an assistant to the assistant tutor.

What did you think you wanted to be when you grew up?
I started out wanting to be a Lego Master Builder. That’s the name of the people who design the sets and build the big structures at Lego Land, or at least it used to be. I think they call them something else now. Apparently what they do as part of their application process is send you a box of random parts and you send them back your creation or you take pictures of what you make from the box.

That is so cool! What would you make?
Maybe a Lego Cookie Monster? I can practice here because we actually have a Lego bucket in the office. In fact, maybe we should turn the office into a Lego room! We can use Legos instead of wallpaper. Though, we’ll need more Legos…

Would you would want to move anywhere else?
I don’t think I would want to move far beyond the fog. Unfortunately since I was born into the fog, I’ve kind of been molded by it. I prefer some sunny days but I find areas where there’s too much humidity unbearable. I could probably handle Hawaii though!

For the people who travel a lot, what’s the most helpful tip that you have?
Prepare as much as possible for that security line moment. Before I’m even up at the metal detector, all the things that I don’t want in my pocket are already in my bags. I can reliably get to the airport within 25-30 minutes before my flight leaves and still make it.

What’s your favorite time of the day or the time that you feel most productive?
It actually depends. Lately, I’ve been really focused at night. Around 7-9 I’m in the zone and getting a lot done. But normally it’s around 6:00 PM. I still try and come in early though, so I can have some flexibility with my day!

So now the time has come for some quick-fire questions. Just say the first answer that pops in your head starting with… coffee or tea?
Coffee. I like Earl Grey tea but I would have to say coffee.

Hot or Iced Coffee?
I think hot, even though I really love an iced coffee. Can I say both?

Bagel or donut?
Donut.

Dogs or cats?
Dogs.

Let’s say you were an animal. What kind of animal would you be?
I’m one of those monkeys on a tropical island that learns to steal drinks from tourists and then hides in the trees. That’s my spirit animal.

What’s your favorite kind of cereal?
A combination of Rice Krispies, Cheerios, and Granola. I made it up when I was young. I forgot about it for probably 10 years, but I tried it again recently and it was just as good as I remembered it. Family recipe!

Favorite breakfast food besides your cereal combo?
Waffles. They’re the best! They’re just like a whole bunch of organized cups for everything you want to put in them. Like a pool of butter and then just lightly drizzle the syrup and let it soak in.

What’s your perfect pizza?
My perfect pizza is basically a veggie pizza with a little bit of pepperoni and cheese-filled crust.

What’s your favorite kind of ice cream?
Chocolate. Three big scoops. Sometimes I’ll have a giant bowl every night which means I’m out of ice cream in four days.

And last but not least… what super hero powers would you have if you could have any power?
I’d really like telekinesis.

A perfect superpower to add to our team!
