Join and Participate in America Saves Week

The 5th annual America Saves Week is February 19 – 26, 2012. The movement started in 2007 as an initiative of the America Savings Education Council and reaches thousands of individuals and organizations all over the country.

About the Mission

The majority of Americans do not have enough in savings, for retirement, emergencies or other financial disasters. America Saves Week focuses on equipping people everywhere with the knowledge and support to build wealth, and not debt.

With the use of social media and local businesses, America Saves Week has created a community to help increase savings and bring hope to families and individuals across the nation. This mission (if you choose to accept it) involves 3 easy steps:

1. Set a Goal
The first step is to assess your savings progress, which asks a series of questions and offers tools to help find your answers. As you go down the list you may find you need to focus more on long term goals like retirement, or you might need to build up an adequate fund for emergencies.

You can also take a quick financial quiz to test your savings knowledge. Any choice you make will be the right one, there are no wrong answers. Knowledge creates opportunity. Some of the answers and statistics are very surprising and somewhat shocking.

2. Make a Plan
With the help of the America Saves community you can create a custom savings plan, with tips and advice through their newsletter. The tips they share can help you save money on food, clothing and other life expenses.

You can also listen to saving money messages from experts and wealth coaches. They share lots of simple, but inspiring strategies for paying down debt and building wealth.

3. Save Automatically
America Saves Week encourages all Americans to maintain a savings balance of $500 – $1,000 for financial emergency situations. And the best way to complete this goal is to start saving automatically.

You can save each month by direct depositing money from your paycheck, or create an automatic withdrawal from your checking account. Small amounts build up over time, all you have to do is start!

Key Saving Strategies

On this mission there are 3 key money saving strategies.

  • Pay off high interest debt
  • Save for emergencies
  • Save automatically every month

By following these key strategies you can improve your financial situation, and create a successful plan of action for your future. Another inspiring way to stay on track is to read saver stories. They are real people just like you and me, who are making a difference in their lives and in their futures.

Is it just a coincidence that America Saves Week is the same week as Fat Tuesday? :)

I definitely need this kick in the pants, so thanks for the reminder, Carrie!
